Center for Service Leadership
Service Learning
The single most important distinguishing feature of Waynesburg University is the connection between high-quality academics, community service and faith development. Service Learning involves every Waynesburg student through partnerships with over 40 local and regional service partner agencies and an ever-expanding network of international opportunities.
Service learning is a general education requirement of all students at Waynesburg University. Students enrolled in service learning must complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service during a semester for a non-profit organization.
Waynesburg students deliver over 1500 hours of volunteer service every week of the school year and travel to sites in other states and countries in the summer and during breaks. This, combined with the values-based liberal arts curriculum of the University, prompted the Templeton Foundation to name Waynesburg to its prestigious Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges in 1997. Waynesburg University has also been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The University has received the Honor Roll with Distinction in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Schools receive this award for the extraordinary and exemplary community service contributions of its students, faculty and staff in meeting critical community and national needs.
The Center for Service Leadership links the University's Service Learning program with local and regional non-profit organizations and multiplies the already considerable impact of Waynesburg's tradition of service. As an institution of Christian Higher Education, we have the responsibility of planting the seeds of becoming a servant leader in the Waynesburg University student body and making connections between the head, hands and heart.
