Students to attend fall service trips

Volunteer sites include Antietam and Waynesburg

Twenty-three Waynesburg University students will participate in three service trips to be offered during Fall Break. Led by faculty and staff members, students will serve the communities of Antietam, Maryland, and Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.


Antietam National Battlefield and Historical Societies – Antietam, Maryland

Led by Marie Leichliter-Krause, assistant provost for Academic Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness, and Rea Redd, director of the Eberly Library, seven students will serve in Antietam, Maryland from Saturday, Oct. 12, to Thursday, Oct. 17.

Students will assist with preservation and restoration at a number of sites. Some of these sites, including: Antietam National Battlefield Park, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Shepherdstown Historical Society, Tolson’s Chapel Historical Site and Little Antietam Creek Archaeological Society.

Greene County Habitat for Humanity – Waynesburg, Pennsylvania

Six students will work with Greene County Habitat for Humanity in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. This service trip will be led by Avery White, graduate assistant for the Center for Service Leadership.

Participating students will serve the Greene County community from Saturday, Oct. 12, to Saturday, Oct. 19, by building homes to address substandard housing issues.

Greene County Immersion – Waynesburg, Pennsylvania

Led by Kelley Hardie, assistant dean of student services and director of the Center for Service Leadership, 10 students will serve at various locations within and around Greene County from Sunday, Oct. 13, to Saturday, Oct. 19.

Students will serve at the Greene County Historical Society, St. Ann’s Good Neighbor Dinner Program, the Ronald McDonald House, 2nd Sam 9, the Corner Cupboard Food Bank and Project Linus Greene County Chapter, where they will pack food pantries, distribute food and make blankets among other things.


These service trips allow students the opportunity to connect with the communities they serve and with the mission of the University in a hands-on setting.

“It provides students with an understanding of the social needs that exist within our community and around the globe, and fulfills our University mission of connecting faith, learning and service,” said Hardie.
