Matthew Stultz Feb 22, 2019

Waynesburg University will host a Mindfulness Certificate Course Saturday, March 23, and Sunday, March 24, in the Stover Campus Center. The course, being offered by PESI, a leading organization in continuing education events for mental health professionals, will provide intensive training sessions aimed at helping participants use mindfulness techniques with clients.

The target audience includes students, professionals and community members in the fields of psychology, counseling, and social work, among other mental health professions.

The cost is $300 per person, and registration closes March 1. To register online, or to learn more, visit waynesburg.edu/pesimindfulness.

“Offering this training on campus aligns with Waynesburg University’s goal of offering innovative and student-centered learning experiences,” said Sarah Bell, coordinator of academic communications and study abroad. “The course will provide topical insight to participants as they learn from an expert in the area of focus.”

That expert will be Dr. Bries Erik Deerrose, a licensed clinical psychologist, who works as a consulting psychologist with the Department of Veterans Affairs and is a member of the National Register of Health Service Psychologists.

Deerrose has been trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and has studied mindfulness experientially with the Dalai Llama.

The two-day certificate course will focus on the core skills of mindfulness, as well as training in the use of mindfulness for trauma, anxiety, depression, relationships and more.

The campus sponsor is Waynesburg University’s Psychology Club.

“Our goal is to provide the University’s students and surrounding area’s mental health professionals with an opportunity to get specific training in a popular topic among the counseling field,” said Justin Shirey, a senior psychology major and president of the Psychology Club.

Check in each day will begin at 7:30 a.m. Lunch is not provided in the cost of registration but an hour is provided for attendees to have lunch on their own. The sessions end at 4 p.m.
