Waynesburg University’s 2019-2020 academic school year officially began Thursday, Aug. 22, with the University’s annual Matriculation Ceremony. President Douglas G. Lee and other University leaders welcomed the freshman class at the 2 p.m. ceremony in Roberts Chapel.
“Welcoming new students to campus is always exciting, especially after all the months of preparation working with them and their families to make the start of their Waynesburg experience successful,” said Jackie Palko, director of undergraduate and graduate admissions. “With all the activities and events planned during New Student Orientation, our freshmen become immediate members of the Waynesburg community.”

This year, students representing 57 majors and academic areas of interest and 15 states, including Arizona, California and Texas, matriculated to Waynesburg University. More than $11.2 million in aid was awarded to the incoming class, which includes the first recipients of the new Founders Scholarship. The Founders Scholarship covers all tuition and fees for up to three Pennsylvania residents.
The names of matriculating students were announced by Lanny Frattare, assistant professor of communication and former voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Doug Wilson, lecturer of communication.
Matriculation marks the beginning of an eventful weekend organized to introduce freshmen to their new home at Waynesburg University. The incoming class will meet with faculty, participate in activities that allow them to meet other new students and attend numerous informational meetings.
On Saturday, new students will also participate in service projects across Greene County and in Morgantown, West Virginia. Service sites include Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Corner Cupboard Food Bank and the Ronald McDonald House, among others.
Freshmen moved into their residence halls Thursday, Aug. 22. Upperclassmen will move into residence halls Saturday, Aug. 24, and Sunday, Aug. 25, and classes will begin Monday, Aug. 26.
