Waynesburg Unity Trail to host Celebration Tree Day

The first-ever celebration will be held April 28

The Waynesburg Unity Trail will host its first-ever Celebration Tree Day Sunday, April 28, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the trail. The event is free, and the public is cordially invited to attend.

At this event, Shea Zwerver, program coordinator and community engagement coordinator for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, will present a program to teach participants how to plant trees. Then, participants will plant trees in celebration of loved ones.

Janet Paladino, professor of biology, said this new event will promote a healthy ecosystem, while also honoring people in the community. Each tree planted will be designated with commemorative plaques, she said.

“Our Celebration Tree Day not only commemorates our relationship with plants, but also with people,” Paladino said. “We are planning trees in celebration of special people or events in our lives, either past or present.”

The RK Mellon Foundation donated 30 trees for Celebration Tree Day. Funding for the project was also provided by the RK Mellon Foundation and the EQT Corporation. The Unity Trail is a joint project between the Borough of Waynesburg and the University that focuses on the importance of restoring natural habitats in our community.
